At the Historic White Rock Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA

July 18th, 2026

Jackson Street United Methodist Church in partnership with the Jubilee Family Development Center and the International Ota Benga Committee (OBIC) joined the community in July to honor the life and legacy of Laura Munson through a day of service at the Lynchburg’s oldest African American cemetery.

White Rock Cemetery is known to be the burial place of Ota Benga, next to Gregory Willis Hayes. White Rock Cemetery Preservation is one of the goals of the Ota Benga International Committee (OBIC).

Munson devoted her time and resources, during her lifetime, to preserving the rich heritage of the Historic White Rock Cemetery. Volunteers come together every July to recognize her lasting contribution. Read more about her life here: Laura Munson — White Rock Cemetery

This year’s group mowed, raked, trimmed bushes, and cleaned the grounds, followed by words and prayer at Ota gravesite.
